Maira Jamal
Installation Art, Site-Specific/Multidisciplinary
Born and raised in Singapore, Maira Jamal steered into the fine arts after obtaining a distinction in A’levels art. She currently holds a BA (Hons) in Fine Arts from Open University (UK) and was trained in LASALLE College of the Arts with a Diploma in Fine Arts (Painting).

As a multi-diciplinary art practitioner, she has exhibited and commisioned some of her other works. However, she has mainly exposed her art unknowingly to the public in a guerilla-style manner, through satirical performances. Her performances are tongue-in-cheek social commentaries based on observing the shifting patterns of current social behaviour where she highlights each individual’s insecurities in a public situation, like Singapore, where there are many rules and regulations to abide. She tackles the themes of public versus private spaces, and pushing the boundary of artform through a light-hearted manner. Maira Jamal freelanced in schools via art enrichment companies and has trained in the art studio, before embarking her training as a Fine Arts assistant program manager in an enrichment group company.

Besides working on my own strings of abstract paintings, I satiate myself through harmless personal expedition that often questions the boundaries of art making.

In observing the shifting patterns of current social behaviour, each individual’s insecurities are often emphasized when placed in a public situation, like Singapore, where there are many rules and regulations to abide. I am a people-watcher. I do sometimes stalk and watch people from afar; creating a sketch of them, painting brief notes based on my first impression of them. I challenge my own perception based on the short observation of their ‘real’ character versus their ‘performance’ in the public eye. I like to ponder on social issues, often engaging in heated personal debate about why we behave in a certain manner.
