Lee Cai Jun
Ceramics, Sculpture
Lee Cai Jun (b. 1986) is a ceramist who graduated with a Diploma (Distinction) from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 2006 where she majored in ceramic with a minor studies in sculpture. An awardee of the Georgette Chen Scholarship, Cai Jun works with clay as a main medium and construct them in various organic forms that relate to nature. She has represented STB in an international Snow Sculpture competition in Sapporo and has been awarded grants in ‘07 and ‘09 for residency programs overseas. Back at home, she has participated in group shows such as ‘Contemporary Ceramic’ (2008) and ‘4 Elements’ (2009).

In her works, Cai Jun wishes to address an understanding of nature through being able to live a life of balance in it, as she has always been deeply captivated by nature’s beauty and its harmonious relationships. Hers is an artistic vision which is inspired by a rich biodiversity of ecosystems and their intrinsic aesthetic and spiritual values. By working extensively with clay, her materials relate closely to the theme but at the same time allows its artist to challenge its limits due to its malleable and versatile nature. As a result, her works retain nature’s own qualities by resembling organic forms of nature in texture and colour and possess their own distinguishing character. Ultimately, the focus on the physicalities between each pieces, provides a sense of harmony and rhythm in their interaction. Her sentiments are best echoed in the quote: “Nature is a mutable cloud which is always and never the same” by Ralph Waldo Emerson.
